These superb evergreen succulents are commonly known as Houseleeks and can be grown as outdoor or house plants. Sempervivum form dense rosettes of foliage, which meld together to create a living carpet of colour. Each summer, mature rosettes may produce panicles of star-shaped flowers. Although individual rosettes die after flowering, they are swiftly replaced by small offsets, which quickly fill any gaps. These hardy perennials are extremely drought-tolerant once established – perfect for planting in wall crevices, rockeries and alpine troughs and a great house plant for a windowsill indoors. Grow sempervivum plants in sharply drained, gritty soil in full sun. Height: 8cm (3in). Spread: 3cm (12in).
